But, of course the Romans leave him cold - Copiers? Synthesizers? Administrators? Lawyers? Technicians? What, over Homer? The Iliad and The Odyssey? Aristotle and plot structure? I don't think so (though HBO had a kicking series with Rome!).

I think this is a very valuable insight on it's own... how many great writers are obsessed with certain periods because they were there.
