But, of course the Romans leave him cold - Copiers? Synthesizers? Administrators? Lawyers? Technicians? What, over Homer? The Iliad and The Odyssey? Aristotle and plot structure? I don't think so (though HBO had a kicking series with Rome!).

I think this is a very valuable insight on it's own... how many great writers are obsessed with certain periods because they were there.

It seems the best things almost always evolve from instinct. Elsewise, we might still be in caves.
